Morecambe Local History Research Group
Published Date: 23 August 2007
In a recent article I looked at the area we now refer to as the former Frontierland site and traced it right back to its very earliest recorded use as a customs officers' vantage point. It then was used as a cattle field to rest livestock on its way by boat from Ireland and on to various parts of England. The land was later a Territorials' gun park and firing range, until a wayward gunner managed to put a hole in a passing passenger ferry. But its longest continuous use was, of course, as a fun park..... Read More...

The second CIA unit is running two cross-disciplinary projects, both of which are in conjunction with the MA Design at the Manchester School of Art

Ways of Worldly Wisdom
Manchester Metropolitan University is pursuing an option to develop a new campus in Hulme. It is intended to accommodate the Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care currently located at the Elizabeth Gaskell Campus on Hathersage Road and the Institute of Education, currently based in Didsbury. The proposed site centres upon brownfield land in the heart of Hulme, once home to The Crescents, an infamous 1960s social housing estate.
REMEMBER : Students will map the various dimensions of the community - historical, geographical, topological, physical, social, cultural, educational, economic...
REVEAL : Students will then identify how these connect to the various dimensions of the university
CONSTURCT : Students are to propose opportunities for a range of social, educational and economically beneficial exchanges between the local community in Hulme and the Manchester Metropolitan University.

Off the Beaten Track
The group will investigate the notion of “The Illuminations”, a phenomenon particular to seaside towns. The project will explore the viability of re-introducing this seasonal highlight into Morecambe on the north-west coast of England.
Students are to develop a proposal for public lighting. PROJECT, SHINE, REFLECT, GLOW, and ILLUMINATE Moreambe! Embrace and develop new technologies to interact with the town / landscape on both a temporary and permanent basis.
Welcome!
